PARTS OF A BOAT

Battens                  Long light narrow strips of wood used to keep the Mainsail Leech taut.
Batten Pockets      Long narrow pockets fitted to the Mainsail Leech into which the battens are fitted
Block                    A type of pulley.
Boom                    Spar along which the Foot of the Mainsail is stretched.
Bottle Screw         A screw-threaded frame, which turns on two threaded pins, each pin being fitted with an eye.
Bottom Boards     Wooden boards fitted inside the boat to keep the weight off the planking etc.
Bow                      Fore end of the boat.
Bow Plate             Metal plate fitted to the bows to which the Forestay is secured.
Buoyancy Bags      Sealed air compartments.
Burgee                  Flag fitted at mast top and used for indicating wind direction.
Centreboard          A wooden board lowered through a slot in the middle of the keel.
Centreboard Box  Used for housing the centreboard.
Shroud Plates        Metal fittings secured to the side of the boat to which the Shrouds are secured
Cleats                    Fittings for securing a rope etc.
Cringle                  An eye sewn into a sail through which a rope is passed to secure the sail.
Fairlead                 A fitting through which a sheet is passed.
Foredeck              That part of the deck fitted in front of the Mast.
Foresail/Jib           Small triangular sail fitted to Forestay.
Forestay               Wire that supports the Mast and Jib from the bows.
Gaff                       A spar to which the Head of a "Lug" type rigged Mainsail is attached.
Gudgeon               Metal block with a hole, fitted to the Transom on which the rudder hangs.
Gooseneck            A jointed hinged fitting fitted to the Mast used for attaching the Boom to the Mast.
Gunwhales            The strengthening piece at the top of the Hull sides fitted all round.
Halyards                Ropes used for hoisting and lowering the Mainsail and Jib.
Hull                       The structural frame and planking forming the body of the boat.
Jib Sheets              Ropes used for controlling the jib.
Keel                      Fore and Aft centre member of the Hull.
Kicking Strap        Rope used to prevent the Boom lifting.
Mainsail                 Large sail hoisted on the Mast.
Mainsheet              Rope used for controlling the Mainsail.
Mast                     Main spar which supports the sails.
Painter                   The rope at the bows of a small boat used for securing the boat to a pontoon etc.
Pintle                     Metal pin fitted to the Transom on which the Rudder hangs.
Port Side               The left hand side of the boat looking towards the bows.
Rigging                  A general term used for all the wires and ropes.
Rudder                  Hinged on the stern Transom and used for steering the boat.
Running Rig           Wire and ropes by which a boat sails hoisted and controlled.
Sail Track              A guide way fitted on the Mast in which lugs, attached to the Luff of a Sail run.
Shackle                 A Metal link, U shaped and with a screw threaded pin.
Standing Rigging    Stays (Forestay and Shrouds) by which the Mast is supported.
Starboard Side       The right hand side of the boat looking towards the bows.
Stern                      Aft end of the boat.
Shrouds                  Wire supports Port and Starboard for the Mast.
Spinnaker                A three cornered balloon shaped sail hoisted in front of the mast, jib and forestay.
Spinnaker Boom     A pole used to hold and spread the foot of the Spinnaker.
Tiller                       Lever fitted to the rudder head for steering.
Tiller Extension      An additional folding length fitted to the Tiller - increases the length of the Tiller.
Thwart                    Seats placed across the boat.
Transom                  Flat plank fitted at the stern of the boat to which the Rudder is fitted.
Toe Straps              Webbing or canvas bands secured to stretchers or to the bottom of the boat and used as footholds.
